A new shadow play adapted from a Turkmen
folktale,
Mamed & the Golden Coins was presented as part of
Harmony
Theatre's 2009 Yolka show: Our
Tales.
Mamed and the Golden Coins tells the story of a young Turkmen
nomad who is given golden coins by his mother to go to the city and
make something of his life. Seemingly squandering his money to first
become a musician, then a scholar, then a chess player, Mamed considers
himself a failure until he joins a Silk Road caravan and discovers that
the skills he has learned are in fact quite useful.
The show features intriguing shadow puppets, beautiful backdrops of
Turkmen paintings, and an incredible ensemble
of performers young and old.
The show also features live music played upon
the oud (Middle Eastern lute).
Listen to some music
samples from the soundtrack.
